The best starting point for this Transylvania, Romania itinerary is Sibiu International Airport (unless arriving by car from elsewhere in Europe). From the airport, renting a car is highly recommended. - Spring: Mild weather, fewer crowds, but snow may remain in higher elevations.

Day 1: Fly into Sibiu, Transfăgărășan Highway & Bâlea Lake
Your Transylvania, Romania itinerary begins in Sibiu.
After arriving in the morning, pick up your rental car and drive toward the famous Transfăgărășan Highway near the town of Scoreiu. Often described as one of the most spectacular drives in the world, this winding mountain road cuts through the Carpathian Mountains with dramatic switchbacks, steep drops and panoramic views at every turn.
As you drive, keep an eye out for Eurasian brown bears, which are frequently seen along this route. However, it’s important not to stop too close or feed them. Many people do feed them which is becoming a growing issue in the region that puts both animals and visitors at risk.
Stop at the parking lot for Cascade Balea and the Telecabina Balea. From here, you can take a short hike to Cascade, Balea, an impressive waterfall. The trail is 0.9 mile (1.4km) point to point with 267m elevation gain through forest and over rocks along a steep section.
Once you return back to the parking lot, you can either drive further along the road up to Balea Lake (if it is open) or take the scenic cable car up to the lake for 18 euro per person each way. In the summer, the cable car can get quite busy with long waiting times. Surrounded by rugged peaks, this glacial lake is one of the highlights of any Romania itinerary. There’s a restaurant here where you can stop for lunch while enjoying the mountain views.
After exploring, continue your drive and make your way to Bran (approximately 2–2.5 hours), where you’ll base yourself for the next three nights. The town is famous for Bran castle – the home of Dracula. There are lots of accommodation options including these recommended ones:
There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from for dinner.
Day 2: Piatra Craiului National Park and rural Transylvania
Day 2 of your Transylvania Romania itinerary is dedicated to nature and hiking in Piatra Craiului National Park.
There are many hiking trails to choose from in the national park. One of the best trails is the Măgura loop. This 12.2km moderately challenging loop trail showcases the diversity of Transylvania’s landscapes. The trail begins through rolling farmland which looks exactly like the Shire from the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings. It then leads up through forest before opening into a meadow with beautiful mountain views. As you continue, you’ll head back through forest, another meadow home with a shepherd and then through a riverbed where some scrambling is involved and then through the bottom of a canyon.
A couple of important notes about hiking here:
- Bears are present in this area so it’s best to carry bear spray, hike in groups and make noise.
- Shepard dogs are well known in Romania for being territorial. You may come across them along this trail – keep calm and continue steadily along the trail even if they are trying to make you go back.
After your hike, explore the surrounding villages of Măgura and Peștera, where traditional rural life still thrives.
For dinner, we recommend stopping at Akasha Restaurant near Pestera. The restaurant has an outdoor terrace with incredible views across the rolling countryside towards the mountains. It also serves traditional dishes – perfect for after a long hike.
Day 3: Castles, Busteni and Brasov
Today’s Transylvania, Romania itinerary focuses on the region’s most iconic castles and towns.
Start your morning at Bran Castle, famously linked to the legend of Dracula. While the connection is largely fictional, the castle itself is impressive, perched dramatically on a rocky hilltop. You can take a guided tour of the castle. After exploring inside, you can take a short but steep hike to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the castle. The trailhead starts in a forest opposite the castle, it is not clearly marked but you should see it winding up into the trees.
Next, drive to Bușteni to visit Cantacuzino Castle, a beautiful neo-Romanian palace set against the backdrop of the mountains.
Continue to Peleș Castle in Sinaia, widely considered one of the most beautiful castles in Europe, known for its ornate interiors and fairytale-like architecture.
In the afternoon, head to Brașov. Wander its charming Old Town, explore the medieval Saxon walls, and visit landmarks like the Black Church. As evening falls, enjoy dinner in one of Brașov’s lively restaurants before returning to Bran.
Day 4: Sighișoara, Fly out of Sibiu
On your final day, continue your Transylvania, Romania itinerary with a drive to Sighișoara (just over 2 hours from Bran).
The old town of Sighisoara is one of the best preserved medieval fortified cities in Europe. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and looks like a village out of a fairytale. The colourful buildings, cobblestone streets and whimsical windows resembling eyes add to its fairytale setting. The best way to explore the old town is on foot. Wander the streets, see the clock tower, walk the covered staircase up to the church and have lunch at a local restaurant.
Later in the day, make your way back south to Sibiu (approx 1.5 hour drive) to end your Romania itinerary. On your way to Sibiu you can detour through the countryside to the village of Biertan, home to a 16th century fortified church surrounded by vineyards.
