A guide to Kruger National Park accommodation options

Located in South Africa, Kruger National Park is one of the best places in the world to see the Big Five — lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. It is also one of Africa’s largest game reserves, covering 19,485 km² of diverse landscapes. Because the park is so vast, most visitors focus on one or two areas when planning their stay, making the choice of Kruger National Park accommodation a key part of the safari experience.

From luxury lodges and boutique safari camps to mid-range options and budget-friendly rest camps, there is accommodation to suit every style and budget. Some properties are located inside the park, others just outside its gates, and some are in private reserves bordering Kruger. Your choice will also depend on the type of safari you want — guided game drives led by experienced rangers or a self-drive safari at your own pace.

With so many options, deciding where to stay in Kruger can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down all the accommodation types, highlights the top lodges and camps, and helps you choose the best place to stay for an unforgettable safari experience.

Best areas to stay in Kruger National Park

Choosing where to stay in Kruger National Park is one of the most important decisions for your safari. The best area depends on your time, wildlife interests, and the type of safari experience you want. Answering these questions will help you narrow down the ideal region and accommodation type.

Ask yourself:

  • How many days do I have to explore Kruger?
  • Do I want to see the Big Five, or focus on big cats and rarer species?
  • Would I prefer a fully guided safari or a self-drive safari?

Kruger National Park regions: North vs Central vs South

Kruger is divided into three main regions, each with its own landscapes, wildlife, and safari experiences:

Southern Kruger – South of the Sabie River, this is the most wildlife-dense area of the park. Expect excellent chances of spotting the Big Five, wild dogs, and hippos. This region is ideal for first-time visitors.

Central Kruger – Between the Sabie and Olifants Rivers, Central Kruger is known as Big Cat Country, with lions, leopards, and cheetahs thriving here. You’ll also see large herds of zebras, giraffes, and other plains game.

Northern Kruger – North of the Olifants River, this quieter region has fewer animals but is perfect for spotting rarer species and enjoying world-class birdwatching. It’s a peaceful area for travellers seeking solitude and fewer crowds.

Because the park is so large, you’ll need to decide how much of it you can realistically explore.

Recommended visit durations:

  • 1–4 days: focus on one region
  • 4–8 days: visit two regions
  • 8–14 days: explore all three regions

Inside Kruger vs outside the park

Another factor in choosing where to stay in Kruger is whether you want to stay inside the park or just outside its gates.

Inside the park:

  • Close to wildlife — no extra driving in/out
  • Options range from budget rest camps and campsites to luxury private concessions
  • Private lodges inside the park often allow exclusive off-road drives and night safaris unavailable to the public

Outside the park:

  • Accommodation options include lodges, guesthouses, and hotels in nearby towns or on the park boundary
  • Requires additional driving time although this depends how close it is to the park and will likely just mean a slightly earlier start and later finish

Adjacent to the park in private game reserves (greater Kruger)

  • Some properties are in private game reserves like Sabi Sands, Timbavati, or Manyeleti, which share unfenced borders with Kruger, allowing wildlife to roam freely

No matter your choice, the right location can dramatically enhance your safari experience. A breakdown of Kruger National Park accommodation options is provided below.

Guided safari game drives vs self-drive safari

Kruger National Park offers a unique opportunity to see wild lions, elephants, leopards, hippos and more from your very own car or rental car – making a self-drive safari a popular and affordable option. Self-driving allows you to explore at your own pace, choosing whichever road or dirt track your heart desires. Accommodation options for self-drivers typically include government-run rest camps, rustic campsites and overnight hides. More on these accommodation options below.

If you are looking for more information on choosing and planning a self-drive safari in Kruger, check out this guide.

For a more traditional safari experience, fully guided safaris provide luxury or mid-range accommodation, meals and twice-daily game drives with expert guides in vehicles designed to get closer to wildlife.

If your schedule and budget allow, consider a combination: for example 4 nights self-drive and 2 nights guided safari.

Booking & safari activities

Reservations for all rest camps can be made through the South African National Parks (SANParks) website. These camps are extremely popular, especially during peak travel seasons, so booking well in advance is recommended.

Many rest camps also offer guided safari activities that can easily be combined with a self-drive itinerary. Options typically include sunrise and sunset game drives, night drives, guided bush walks, full-day safaris, and private game drives led by knowledgeable and experienced guides. Prices are very reasonable, generally ranging from approximately R400–R1,500 per person depending on the activity.

Most activities can be booked online via the SANParks website or directly at camp reception desks. While some tours can be arranged the night before or on the day, popular options such as sunrise drives and guided bush walks often sell out quickly, so booking ahead is advised. Private drives may also need to be arranged in advance depending on availability.
