Saturna Island overview

Saturna Island is part of the Southern Gulf Islands chain in British Columbia, situated roughly midway between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Lying at the eastern edge of the Gulf Islands, it remains one of the quieter and lesser-visited islands in the region.

With a small year-round population of approximately 350 residents, Saturna feels wonderfully peaceful. Around 44% of the island is protected as part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, including the surrounding marine waters. These rich ecosystems are home to harbour seals, river otters, porpoises and the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. One of the best places in Canada to spot them is at East Point, where powerful tidal currents create ideal feeding conditions for marine life.

Despite its Pacific Northwest setting, Saturna benefits from a Mediterranean-like climate, with many dry, sunny days between late spring and early autumn. The result is an island that feels both rugged and gentle where visitors can hike forested ridge lines, wander coastal bluffs and watch the sunset over calm bays.

Above all, Saturna offers a laid back atmosphere to spend a slow  relaxing weekend soaking in the coastal scenery, exploring the mountainous land, and watching wildlife.

When to visit Saturna Island

The best time to visit Saturna Island is between May and October. The island is highly seasonal and during these months you can expect to enjoy warm, dry weather, expanded ferry schedules and restaurants and shops open for the season. Summer also offers the best wildlife viewing opportunities and longer daylight hours, making it ideal for making the most of your 2 day Saturna Island itinerary.

Getting to and around Saturna Island

Ferry:

Saturna Island can be reached by BC Ferries. Although it feels off the beaten path, there are still daily sailings connecting the island with Vancouver (Tswassen), Victoria (Swartz Bay) and several neighbouring Gulf Islands. Service increases during the summer months.

From Vancouver (Tswassen), there is no direct sailing route and the ferry stops at several other islands before reaching Saturna. This means that travel time can range from two to four hours. Reservations are available for this route in advance.

From Victoria (Swartz Bay) on Vancouver Island, some direct sailings are available, though many routes include additional stops at other islands before reaching Saturna. The direct crossing takes around one hour. Reservations are not available from Swartz Bay, so arriving at least one hour before departure is recommended during busy periods.

Ferries can accommodate vehicles, cyclists and foot passengers.

Floatplane:

For a quicker arrival, you can fly by floatplane.  Seair offers trips from Richmond terminal, and HarbourAir offers private charters to the island.

Getting around:

Although Saturna is small, you’ll still need transportation to fully experience this 2 day Saturna Island itinerary.

Bringing your own vehicle on the ferry is the easiest option. If you are arriving to the island without a car, the Saturna Shuttle Service can be pre-booked at least 48 hours in advance and operates on a donation basis (text (604)760-9975 or email saturnashuttle@gmail.com).

Cycling is another popular way to explore Saturna. Though be prepared for steep hills, narrow winding roads and significant elevation gain.

Where to stay on Saturna Island

Accommodation options on Saturna are limited, but nonetheless perfect for a quiet island getaway.

B&Bs:

  • Saturna Lodge
  • Four Winds B&B

Airbnbs:

A small collection of cabins and private homes are available across the island.

Campgrounds:

There are two campgrounds located on Saturna.

  • Narvaez Bay Campground: Located within Gulf Island National Park Reserve, this backcountry campground sits in a beautiful bay framed by arbutus trees and orchard groves. It’s just a short stroll to a beach and lookout point over the coastline. With only 7 reservable campsites, a pit toilet and bike racks, it offers a secluded and scenic stay. Access to the campground requires a 1.7km hike (or cycle) down to the bay (steep in sections) and vehicles must be parked at the trailhead. Campground reservations can be made through Parks Canada online at reservation.pc.gc.ca.
  • Arbutus Point Campground: Located beside Lyall Harbour ferry terminal, this is ideal for walk-om passengers. It offers tent sites with picnic tables, pre-erected ocean-view wall tents with beds and decks, shower facilities and easy access to nearby restaurants, groceries and kayak rentals. It’s a convenient and comfortable base for exploring the island.

Day 1: Arrival, East Point & sunset on the coast

Day one of your 2 day Saturna Island itinerary begins with a morning ferry arrival at Lyall Harbour. As you disembark at Lyall Harbour, you’ll immediately notice the slower rhythm of island life: quiet roads, forested hills and ocean views in every direction.

Saturna General Store and Saturday market

Make your way up along the island’s main road to the charming Saturna General Store – the heart of the local community and the only grocery store on the island. It’s the perfect place to stock up on picnic supplies, snacks, water or last minute camping essentials. There’s also a small cafe serving coffee, breakfast and light lunches. Take a seat indoors or join the locals sat out on the veranda enjoying their morning coffee.

If you’re visiting on a summer Saturday, you’re in luck. A small market pops up beside the store, featuring island artisans selling pottery, paintings, handmade clothing, honey and preserves. It’s lovely introduction to Saturna’s creative and close-knit community. On other days, you’ll find the artists at their studios scattered across the island that welcome drop-in visitors.

East Point: wildlife watching & coastal trails

From the General Store, drive around 15-20 minutes (or cycle roughly 1 hour) to East Point, one of the island’s most spectacular natural highlights within Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.

East Point extends into the Salish Sea as a narrow strip of land where dramatic tidal currents churn the water. Even on calm days you’ll see swirling ocean movement – the result of immense volumes of water surging over an underwater sill comparable in height to two Niagara Falls. This natural phenomenon brings plankton to the surface, attracting fish, birds and marine mammals.

Wildlife sightings here are abundant. Harbour seals are present year-round, while harbour porpoises are frequently spotted in summer. In fall and winter, steller sea lions gather offshore at Boiling Reef. River otters, humpback whales and even minke whales are occasional visitors.

The most famous visitors to this area are the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales who pass East Point on their way to and from the mouth of the Fraser River. However, over the past few years the numbers of Chinook Salmon, their preferred prey, has decrease resulting in fewer sightings in the area. Bigg’s (Transient) Killer Whales have also regularly been spotted in these waters.

In addition to looking out for wildlife, take time to walk the easy 1km East Point Loop Trail, which hugs the shoreline and passes  the picturesque red and white heritage fog alarm building. In summer, the small museum inside offers insight into the island’s maritime history.

Mount Warburton

Later in the day, head toward Mount Warburton on the southwest side of the island. You can either drive up the unpaved road (manageable for most vehicles, though steep and uneven in places) or hike the 6km out-and-back Brown Ridge Trail.

At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across the Gulf Islands and surrounding waterways.

Coastal dining or camping relaxation

As evening approaches, settle into your preferred accommodation.

If you’re camping at Navarez Bay, allow time to hike into the campground, set up your tent and enjoy your camp dinner surrounded by arbutus trees and calm waters. Sunset here is very peaceful.

If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, consider dining out:

  • La Cucina serves comforting Italian dishes including pizza and pasta.
  • Saturna Lighthouse Pub located at the ferry terminal offers traditional pub food with waterfront views – perfect for watching sunset.

End your first day of this 2 day Saturna Island itinerary soaking in the island way of life.

Day 2: Winter Cove, Sage Hayward Vineyard & departure

Start your second day with a slow morning at your accommodation. Saturna is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace.

Winter Cove:

Mid-morning, head to Winter Cove, another beautiful coastal area. A gentle 1.3km trail trail winds through forest and along calm shoreline before reaching Winter Point. From here, you’ll look out over Boundary Pass – another excellent vantage point for spotting marine wildlife.

Sage Hayward Vineyards:

In the early afternoon, make your way to Sage Hayward Vineyards on the southwestern side of the island.

Set on sun-drenched slopes with views across the water to neighbouring Gulf Islands, this boutique vineyard is arguably one of the most scenic in Canada. The Mediterranean-like climate allows a variety of grapes to flourish here.

They have a fantastic selection of their own wine to taste, paired alongside locally inspired dishes. Reserve a table in advance and request a seat on the patio for the best views. This is the perfect place to end your 2 day Saturna Island itinerary.

Departure:

As your two days draw to a close, make your way back to Lyall Harbour for your return ferry. During busy summer periods, arrive at least an hour before departure. While waiting, browse the small cluster of shops near the terminal — an ice cream stand, coffee bar, gift shop and art gallery offer a final taste of island charm.
